Q: How will Skype deal with situations like the one in China, where telecom companies and governments want to block your service?
A: What happened in China was, it was a local franchise of China Telecom in a province trying to block the SkypeOut service that hadn’t even launched yet. But in general, Skype does very well in China. In other places, like [in France], the Ministry [of Education and Research] wanted people not to use Skype in universities and places like that. I don’t know if it’s lobbying from telcos or not, because communications—any form of communication—is the basis for infrastructure and society, which helps to build an economy. It’s very important for an economy to build communications. Each country or region that makes it more difficult for users to use Skype is not doing [itself] a favor, for it’s valuable for businesses and consumers in countries to be able to use online services such as Skype.
